Book Review – “Water Tossing Boulders: How a Family of Chinese Immigrants Led the First Fight to Desegregate Schools in the Jim Crow South”

Thanks to “Google Scholar Alerts,” I learned first thing this morning that I officially have another publication–although just a book review I wrote in March 2017–under my hat. This publication is an academic book review of Adrienne Berard’s Water Tossing Boulders: How a Family of Chinese Immigrants Led the First Fight to Desegregate Schools in the Jim Crow South for the Southern Historical Association’s Journal of Southern History housed at Rice University.

The Journal of Southern History requires that its authors hold the Ph.D. (and book review publications are by invitation only). As a result, this is my first publication that was possible only by having a doctorate–small victories! 🙂

You can read my review here.

  1. That sounds like a pretty strange book. The family was not so much trying to identify themselves as “white,” but more trying to identify themselves as “non-black.”

  3. Considering that the book has “numerous problems and inaccuracies,” why is it that the public has given it such glowing reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and etc?

    • Hey Tim!
The book does read well. And people like a good story – especially if it suggests things were “better” than typically thought/said. If the book hadn’t way overstated some of its positions, the book would automatically be much better. But too–if the book had specifically discussed Whiteness and had “criticized” the Lums–a number of people would be automatically turned off, sadly.

  4. Andrew, it is a mistake to criticize “whiteness,” but very to-the-point to criticize white people’s behavior in specific instances. Criticizing whiteness per se just pushes white people into the arms of the right wing, since they know there is nothing they can do about being white.
